Revolutions

For a subject that concerns almost half of the world’s population, the notions of people about feminism are widely misunderstood, disrespected or not even expressed. May it be out of fear of controversial opinions, political and social rage, variety of opinions of people due to different economic and social status and a wide range of cultural backgrounds, but it happens nonetheless. This, however, does not make it less important, but only proves the rising need to address to it. The concept of feminism can be traced back to the 19 th century, believed to have its roots in the western world, primarily Europe. The idea or the ‘first wave’ began with a simple and legal approach – a right to vote. It has to be noted that this movement lasted for about 72 years. After that, the set of ideologies emerged with a more structured format and more rights to fight for. From there, the movement travelled through ages and minds, various ethnicities and parts of the world where it evolved int...

The Picture Of Dorian Gray - A Philosophical Speculation

The Picture Of Dorian Gray - A Philosophical Speculation "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all." - Oscar Wilde Written in the style of Gothic Fiction, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ stands as a controversial masterpiece of Oscar Wilde. It remains his one and only published Novel. The publisher of the monthly magazine was in fear that the work would be perceived by the public as indecent and thus he censored 500 words of it without Wilde’s knowledge. Published in 1890,  the book soon became famous and a subject to fiery harsh criticism for the media and public weren't yet ready to the unconventional themes and ideas that were the crux of the book. It took years, probably half a century for the book to seep into people’s minds, during the mid 19th century the book gained its reputation and since then it climbed to the top and still remains there as an Evergreen Classic Literature book. But other than jus...

Shakespeare: a literary war?

I am pretty sure we all are aware of who William Shakespeare was. But are we aware of Shakespeare the dissension? He was an English playwright, poet and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s greatest dramatist. No arguments there. His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, 2 long narrative poems and a few other verses, now that is where certain literary minds have differences in opinion. One side of the literature world claims that Shakespeare did not write some of his best works. They are known as the anti-Stratfordians (name derived from the fact that he was born and raised in Stratford, Warwickshire). While the other side of this world argues that strong evidence exists that the work in fact is authored by William Shakespeare. Interesting, is it not? I am a fanatic of conspiracy theories and deep uncovered secrets of literature have me immediately hooked on to it. Among the millions...

Electric Cars 2

Electric cars are the future of transportation and there is little debate about it worldwide. They provide us with a much better alternative compared to fossil fuel-based vehicles(mainly petrol and diesel). They are easy to use, accessible and pave the way for newer and more advanced technologies such as self-driving cars and better connectivity options. It is also said that electric cars are less harmful to the environment than fossil fuels, the burning of which emits dangerous gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur and nitrogen oxides etc. But, are they the messiah that they are framed to be? Is there a dark side to electric cars? And even more importantly, exactly how accessible is this future? Fossil fuels and emissions Electric cars are being brought in the market as a replacement to cars that run on fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have been now firmly established as one of the main contributors to global climate change. They help this vile cause because they emit ...

Think like a monk… Halfway through the horrific turn of events of this eventful year, our modern day monk Jay Shetty released his first ever book. Since its release it has been the talk of the town, with celebrities like Ellen Degeneres, Will Smith,  Jada Pinkett Smith, Robin Sharma, Arianna Huffington, Novak Djokovic calling it a must read masterpiece. After topping the charts worldwide and Forbes and Amazon claiming it to be one of the best, the expectations are pretty high when you turn the first page over and they are met. The most simple sounding complex questions like “how to stop over thinking?”, “how to find purpose?”, “how to learn from everyone you meet?” are effortlessly answered by a monk himself. Two celebrity reviews among the dozens that this book has been blessed with, perfectly capture what and how this book is. ‘Jay Shetty’s book is profound, poignant and practical. Electric cars- Part 1

Many in the last century had imagined that by 2020, mankind would have had flying cars and teleportation devices and awesome technology that no one could have possibly imagined. Though SpaceX and Apple give them a run for their money, humans have not quite lived up to their expectations. One of the most anticipated and currently heavily pushed technologies of our time though is the electric car. Everyone wants it, but they are not that good. Even if some are good, they cannot replace their alternative everywhere. In this and the next issue, we are going to talk a little about electric cars. Before we venture into electric cars, we must first have a brief history of cars in general. Though many people throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century lay their claims towards the development of a locomotive, mainly the train, the formal inventor of the car that we know today is known to be Karl Benz, who first presented his car, the Motorwagen, in 1881, with an engine that he design...

Dopamine levels: Are we in control or are we being controlled?

Dopamine levels : Are we in control Or Are we being controlled? Have you ever had that tenacious thought that why aren’t you able to get things done? Why those important things seem so boring and why is this big bucket of procrastination hanging in your hand? Well, one would argue that this is because one has likes and dislikes, a person will obviously favour to do the things that he likes more often than what he dislikes but is important. This seems plausible in some sense, but the world doesn’t work like that, we have to get some things done no matter what we feel about them, that is if one is ambitious to make  one’s life meaningful. Let’s get to addictions now, since they play a major role in wasting our elixir of life and raise a monumental question of we being in control. Now let’s take a look at current young adult’s or a teen’s rough daily time utilization - The world median of teens using social media is about 3 hours a day, concentrating on America, that shifts to 6hrs of...

Fashion, Folk and the Foundation

Fashion, Folk and the Foundation. ‘Art is a line around your thoughts’ – Gustav Klimt My initial understanding of this quote was that art limits one’s thoughts. No, that can’t be right. Honestly, I think art can never really be defined. It can only be interpreted, and for me, art is an idea having a physical form. When I wonder how I framed this definition of art, I always go back and think of my first encounter with it. It wasn’t when I dipped my hands in paint or when I wrote my first poem. My first encounter with art was when I first picked an outfit to wear. In a way, my idea of beauty was given a physical form by how I chose to present myself. That was the first time I learned that how I want to look like is always a reflection of how I feel. A few years later, I realized that there was a name for this ‘dressing-up-for-no-reason’ hobby of mine – it was termed as ‘fashion’. It bothers me that the word fashion is somehow always associated with runways, elitism and femininity. For m...
